THE ANCIENT EXHALE

A workshop in nervous system science, breath, and rest.
Two hours. Free to watch.
Sharyn with a Why and Marie Doherty.

This is where everything begins.

Before the sessions, before the training, before any of it –
there is this. The understanding of why the breath works.
What the nervous system actually is. Why birdsong is medicine
and not decoration. Why rest is not what most of us think it is.

Sharyn with a Why and Marie Doherty built The Exhale Awakening
on the ground this workshop covers. Every session, every programme,
every breathwork they have ever led grows from these roots.

You can watch the whole workshop in one sitting.
Or you can work through it in parts – the teaching segments
are each available separately below the full recording.

There is no sign-up. No obligation.
Just two hours that may change what you understand about
your own nervous system. And then a breath to feel it.

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

not a concept — something you can feel

Your nervous system is your body’s most ancient communication network. It is not separate from what you feel and sense. It is your feeling and your sensing.

Think of it as the root network beneath a forest — mostly invisible, constantly communicating, responding to conditions in the soil and the atmosphere long before the canopy shows any sign. Long before we take action, the nervous system is already at work.

This workshop begins by helping you feel that. Not understand it. Feel it.

NOTHING IS WRONG WITH YOU

your nervous system is doing exactly what it was designed to do

Every response your nervous system has ever produced – fight, flight, freeze, fawn, flop – is intelligent. Each one was the right response to the conditions at the time.

The problem is not a broken nervous system. The problem is a world that has changed faster than our ancient wiring has had time to follow. We are still scanning for predators. The predators are now emails.

A well-rooted tree does not snap in the wind. It bends and returns. That capacity — to rise to meet what comes and return to ground -is what breathwork, practised regularly, builds.

THE FULL WORKSHOP

Two hours. Watch from the beginning.

The complete Ancient Exhale workshop — taught by Sharyn with
a Why and Marie Doherty. Nervous system science, the teaching
on rest, birdsong, and silence, followed by four guided
breathwork practices.

If you have two hours and a quiet space, this is where to start.

Part 1: Welcome

0:34 | Marie and Sharyn

The opening half-minute. Marie introduces the workshop and Sharyn – the two hours ahead, and the one thing they do before anything else: begin in silence and birdsong.

PART 2 – OPENING SILENCE AND BIRDSONG

7:05 | Marie

Two minutes of silence. Two minutes of birdsong. A body check-in. A first felt encounter with the nervous system before a word of science has been spoken.

Marie guides the arrival – attention to the surface beneath you, the connection down through the floor, the first invitation to simply notice what is happening in the body without needing to change it.

Part 3: The Nervous System

3:13 | Marie

The central nervous system. The peripheral nervous system. The autonomic nervous system – the one that keeps the heart beating, the breath moving, digestion running, without a single conscious instruction.

Marie introduces the nervous system not as a concept to understand but as something already alive in the body – the ancient root network of a forest, responding to conditions long before the canopy shows any sign.

Part 4: The Sympathetic Nervous System and the Vagus Nerve

7:02 | Marie

The sympathetic nervous system is not the villain. It is ancient, intelligent, and designed to keep you alive. The problem is not that it activates. The problem is that
it cannot distinguish between a predator and an unanswered email.

Marie introduces the vagus nerve – the longest cranial nerve in the body, the primary carrier of the safety signal – and a small, practical way to tone it that you can use right now, and throughout the breathwork that follows.

PART 5 – BURNOUT AND CHRONIC STRESS

9:08 | Sharyn

Sharyn shares the graph. The upward line that never quite returns to baseline – a stress spike, partial recovery, another spike, less recovery, another, until the system has nowhere left to go.

This is not a character flaw. This is a nervous system responding perfectly to conditions that never give it the all-clear. Modern life is not an acute crisis. It is a
slow, insidious accumulation that the system was never designed to handle.

PART 6 – FIGHT, FLIGHT, FREEZE – AND NOTHING IS WRONG WITH YOU

9:20 | Sharyn

Every nervous system response – fight, flight, freeze, fawn, flop – is intelligent. Each one was the right response to the conditions at the time.

Sharyn covers the full spectrum of stress responses, including dissociation and emotional numbness as forms of nervous system protection. And she names the thing that most wellness culture gets wrong: a well-regulated nervous system is not one that never activates. It is one that can return.

PART 7 – REST, REPLENISHMENT, BIRDSONG, AND THE WINDOW OF TOLERANCE

13:36 | Sharyn

Rest is not the absence of activity. The parasympathetic nervous system does not switch on just because you stop. It responds to the presence of safety – and those are two different things.

Sharyn covers the distinction between collapse and replenishment, the window of tolerance, eustress, and why birdsong is medicine. She ends with the tree in wind: not rigid, not snapping – bending and returning. Deep roots. Strong trunk.

PART 8 – SILENCE

4:09 | Marie

Silence is not neutral. Neuroscience shows that genuine silence promotes new cell growth in the hippocampus – the part of the brain central to memory, learning, and
emotional regulation. Cortisol drops. Blood pressure falls. The heart finds a steadier rhythm.

Our nervous system spends its whole time listening, scanning every sound for safety or threat. Silence gives it permission to stop. Most of us never experience it.

Marie makes the case — quietly, precisely — for choosing it.

PART 9 – THE BREATH AS BRIDGE

4:39 | Marie and Sharyn

Breath is the only part of the autonomic nervous system we can consciously choose to affect. Every deliberate breath is a direct reach into the nervous system – an invitation, not a switch.

Marie and Sharyn introduce the four breath practices that follow:  breath awareness, diaphragmatic breathing, extended exhale, and coherence. One rule throughout: be comfortable. You cannot get this wrong.

Part 10: The Breathwork – All Four Practices

44:34 | Marie and Sharyn

The complete guided breathwork practice. Four segments, led in turn by Marie and Sharyn, woven with birdsong and silence between each.

Breath awareness — Diaphragmatic breathing and vagus nerve toning — Extended exhale and the sigh — Coherence breathing.

The session closes with integration: birdsong returning, a return to the body, reflection prompts, and a few minutes of stillness before the recording ends.
